Tsawwassen is a peninsula community at the southwestern tip of Delta, about 30 kilometres south of Vancouver. It has a small-town feel with an active local family community, a long sandy beach at Centennial Beach, several well-maintained parks, and a library with a strong children’s program. For Nannies and Babysitters, the manageable geography, free outdoor spaces, and practical transit access to Tsawwassen Mills and the ferry terminal make daily planning straightforward.

This guide covers everyday outings for children of all ages, from toddler spray parks and library drop-ins to beach days and indoor play centres. It is useful for both full-time Tsawwassen caregivers and families visiting from elsewhere in Metro Vancouver.

Outdoor parks and playgrounds

Centennial Beach (Boundary Bay Regional Park)

Centennial Beach is one of the best family beaches in Metro Vancouver, with a large sandy shoreline, shallow tidal waters, a playground suited to children ages 5 to 12, picnic tables, covered picnic shelters, a seasonal concession, public washrooms with change rooms, and a wheelchair-accessible beach path (May to September). The wide, flat beach and long tidal reach make it excellent for sandcastle building and beachcombing. Bald eagles, herons, and other raptors are common sightings along the trails. The parking lot fills quickly on summer weekends, arrive before 10 am or expect to use the overflow lot. Dogs must be on leash throughout the park.

The Rotary Waterworks playground spray park opens every year from the Victoria Day weekend to Labour Day weekend (water on from 10 am to 9 pm). Food, snacks, and parent-friendly stops

The main commercial strip in Tsawwassen runs along 56th Street and through Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, which has a food court and several family-accessible restaurants. The mall is a practical stop in poor weather and is directly adjacent to the library. Tsawwassen Mills (the large shopping centre) has more food options including several casual family dining options. Local parent notes

  • Transit: BC Transit routes serve Tsawwassen Town Centre and connect to SkyTrain at Bridgeport Station. The 601 and 620 routes are the main links to the rest of Metro Vancouver. The area is fairly car-dependent for beach and park outings.
  • Parking: Free parking at Diefenbaker Park and Tsawwassen Town Centre. Centennial Beach parking fills early on summer weekends, arrive before 10 am in peak season. The overflow lot is a short walk from the beach.
  • Stroller access: Centennial Beach has a wheelchair-accessible path to the beach (seasonal). Diefenbaker Park has paved paths near the playground and pond. Most residential streets have sidewalks.
  • Washrooms: Available at Centennial Beach, Diefenbaker Park, South Delta Recreation Centre, and Tsawwassen Library.
  • Busy times: Centennial Beach is busiest on summer weekends and during heat waves. Diefenbaker Park spray park gets busy on hot afternoons in July and August. The library is quieter than beaches in all weather.
  • Weather backup: The Tsawwassen peninsula can be sunnier than Vancouver proper in summer, but also windier. Have the library or a mall stop ready when it is cold or rainy.
  • School pickup rhythm: Delta schools generally dismiss between 2:30 and 3:00 pm. Parking near 56th Street schools becomes slow in this window.
  • Ferry traffic: The Tsawwassen BC Ferries terminal creates significant traffic on Highway 17 on peak summer weekends and holidays. Factor in extra travel time if driving in or out of the area during these periods.

More Tsawwassen places to know

Tsawwassen sits at the southwest tip of Metro Vancouver, a peninsula in the Municipality of Delta where farmland meets ocean and the BC Ferries terminal connects the mainland to Vancouver Island. The name means “land facing the sea” in North Straits Salish. For families, it’s one of the most outdoor-rich communities in the region: a sandy beach with shallow tidal flats, the country’s most respected migratory bird sanctuary, and an unusually walkable village core. Here’s where the locals actually go.

A Peninsula at the Edge

Tsawwassen is its own pocket, separated from the rest of Delta by farmland and the BC Ferries causeway. Tsawwassen Town Centre sits along 56th Street, the village’s main commercial spine. Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons are the two large shopping anchors near the ferry terminal, built on Tsawwassen First Nation land. Centennial Beach and Boundary Bay form the southern outdoor edge. Most of what you need for a family day is within 15 minutes of any of these three pockets.

Beaches & Outdoor Spots

Tsawwassen punches well above its size for outdoor space. The shallow tidal flats at Centennial Beach mean the water warms quickly in summer, and the migratory bird sanctuary nearby is a rare urban-edge experience for children.

Centennial Beach (Boundary Bay Regional Park) 12th Ave & Boundary Bay Rd (Tsawwassen) The destination beach. A sheltered bay with a long sandy stretch, tidal flats that turn into “miles of hot sand” at low tide, a large playground that’s well-suited to multiple ages, picnic tables, a café, and ample parking. Eagles nest in the area and the beach is on the Pacific Flyway migratory bird route. The summer ritual for many South Delta families.

Diefenbaker Park 5779 1st Ave (Tsawwassen) The village’s central park. Home of the Rotary WaterWorks spray park (one of the few in South Delta), plus a playground, walking paths, and open lawns. The summer water-feature destination for in-village families.

George C. Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary 5191 Robertson Rd, Westham Island (15 min from Tsawwassen) A 300-hectare sanctuary with wetlands, treed paths, and natural marshes. Picnic facilities at the entrance.

Fred Gingell Park English Bluff Rd (Tsawwassen) A scenic park with a trail descending from English Bluff Road to the waterfront. One of the best sunset-watching spots on the South Delta coast.

Nanny and Babysitter notes for Tsawwassen

Tsawwassen is a relaxed, manageable community for caregivers, with the beach and library covering most daily needs. Centennial Beach is the best single summer destination in the area and worth building routines around on warm weekdays. For winter and wet-season shifts, the library and South Delta Recreation Centre offer free or low-cost structured options.

Before heading out, agree on:

  • Whether the outing needs to stay close to home.
  • Whether the child has nap, snack, stroller, or bathroom needs.
  • Whether transit, car seats, or parking are part of the plan.
  • Whether water play, swimming, skating, or paid activities are approved.
  • What to do if the first plan is too busy or closed.

Parents should give the caregiver one outdoor destination, Centennial Beach or Diefenbaker Park, plus one indoor backup such as the library, and a clear snack or meal plan. For summer days, remind the caregiver to arrive at Centennial Beach before mid-morning to secure parking, and confirm sunscreen and water are packed for beach outings.
