Nanny and Babysitter notes for Richmond

Practical notes for sitters, Nannies, and parents planning care in Richmond.

Richmond is a suburban city south of Vancouver with a strong family infrastructure, large parks, excellent indoor recreation complexes, a public library with active children’s programming, and a historic waterfront village in Steveston that makes for a practical and interesting family outing. The city is flat, which makes stroller navigation easy across most areas, and parking is generally more accessible than in Vancouver.

This guide supports caregivers looking for a mix of outdoor parks, indoor activity options, and community programs. Richmond’s parks and recreation system is extensive, and many of the best options are free or low-cost.

A free waterpark is open from Victoria Day to Labour Day. Adjacent to the Steveston Community Centre, which has an outdoor pool open in summer. One of the best family playgrounds in Metro Vancouver.

Food, snacks, and parent-friendly stops

Steveston Village is the most family-friendly food area in Richmond, with a variety of casual restaurants, bakeries, and takeout spots along Moncton and First Avenue. Pajo’s fish and chips at the wharf is a local staple in warm months. Richmond’s No. 3 Road corridor has extensive food court options at Richmond Centre Mall for a convenient mid-outing stop. The Brighouse area near the library also has family-friendly cafes and grocery options.

Date night ideas

While you’re out, we’ve got your little one. Richmond date nights can go polished, waterfront, or food-crawl casual depending on whether parents want Steveston, Brighouse, or the Alexandra Road corridor.

Origo Club 6888 River Rd. A French restaurant and wine bar near the river, useful for a quieter adult dinner with parking nearby.

Baan Lao Fine Thai Cuisine 4100 Bayview St. A fine-dining Thai room in Steveston for parents who want the date night to be the main event.

Steveston Seafood House 3951 Moncton St. A classic Steveston dinner option that pairs naturally with an evening waterfront walk.

Alexandra Road food corridor works when parents want a casual food-first evening with many Asian restaurant options close together.

Local parent notes

  • Transit: The Canada Line SkyTrain serves Richmond with stops at Brighouse, Aberdeen, Lansdowne, and other stations. Buses connect to Steveston and outlying areas.
  • Parking: Parking is generally plentiful and free at most parks. Steveston Village parking fills up on summer weekends; arrive in the morning or use the Steveston Community Centre parking lot.
  • Stroller access: Richmond is very flat. Steveston’s paved paths, the west dyke trail, and most park routes are stroller-friendly.
  • Washrooms: Available at Steveston Community Park, Garry Point Park, the Olympic Oval, and all library branches.
  • Busy times: Steveston Village and Garry Point are very busy on summer weekends and during spot prawn season (May to July). Weekday mornings are more relaxed.
  • Weather backup: The Oval and Riverport complex are the most versatile indoor fallbacks regardless of weather.
  • School pickup rhythm: Richmond has multiple elementary and secondary schools. Major roads near schools see heavier traffic from 2:30 to 3:30 pm.

Parent & Caregiver Communities

Richmond parent and caregiver community support usually runs through Richmond Public Library, community centres, family resource programs, and neighbourhood school networks. Check current storytimes, parent-child drop-ins, and recreation calendars before planning around a specific session.

Nanny and Babysitter notes for Richmond

Richmond works well as a caregiving destination because its parks are large and low-traffic, and the indoor options are easy to reach without long transit connections. The Steveston area is compact enough that a morning in the park and a lunch stop in the village can fill most of a day.

Before heading out, agree on:

  • Whether the outing stays in Richmond or whether a Canada Line trip into Vancouver is part of the plan.
  • Whether the child has nap, snack, stroller, or bathroom needs before leaving.
  • Whether transit via the Canada Line or a car with parking is the plan.
  • Whether water play, swimming, or paid indoor activities are approved.
  • What to do if Steveston is too busy or the weather turns, the library, the Oval, or Kidtropolis are the most reliable fallbacks.

Give the caregiver one outdoor option (Steveston Community Park or Garden City Park), one indoor backup (Richmond Public Library storytime or Kidtropolis), and a snack or meal plan, either a packed lunch or a Steveston Village food stop.
