More Commercial Drive places to know
The Drive has been the cultural heart of East Vancouver for decades. Italian heritage layered with multicultural communities, indie shops on every block, public art around every corner, and a stroller-walk culture that turns daily errands into a small adventure. With Britannia Community Centre and Eastside Family Place sitting right at its core, Commercial Drive is also one of the most family-supportive corridors in the entire city. Here’s where the locals actually go.
The Drive: A Walkable Corridor
Commercial Drive runs north to south through Grandview-Woodland, and almost everything a young family needs sits along this single stretch. Children’s stores and toy shops, the best Italian delis in the city, beloved coffee houses, restaurants that don’t blink at a stroller, and at night, some of Vancouver’s most distinct cocktail bars. You can spend a full Saturday on The Drive without ever needing the car. Most of the businesses below are right on it, or one block off.
Parks & Outdoor Spots
Grandview-Woodland is one of Vancouver’s most park-rich neighbourhoods. From The Drive’s central anchor green to a full lake within walking distance, families here are spoiled for outdoor options.

Salsbury Park A small neighbourhood park with a playground, popular with the families who live the surrounding side streets. Quieter alternative on busy Trout Lake days.
Templeton Park 700 Templeton Dr Combines a playground with the historic Templeton Pool (outdoor, summer only), making it one of the rare parks where you can do both swim and slide in a single trip.

Nanny and Babysitter notes for Commercial Drive
Commercial Drive is a practical neighbourhood to work in because most family-friendly destinations are within walking distance or a short bus ride. The Britannia complex alone covers pool, ice rink, library, gym, and outdoor space, which means you can adjust plans based on weather without changing locations.
Before heading out, agree on:
- Whether the outing needs to stay close to home or if a walk to Trout Lake is part of the plan.
- Whether the child has nap, snack, stroller, or bathroom needs before leaving.
- Whether transit, car seats, or parking are part of the plan, especially if heading to Science World.
- Whether water play, swimming, or ice skating are approved activities, and whether the family has a Britannia pass or prefers drop-in.
- What to do if the pool is at capacity or the rink session is full, having Grandview Park or a library visit as a fallback keeps the day on track.
Give the caregiver one clear outdoor option (Trout Lake or a local park), one indoor backup (Britannia pool or library), and a snack plan, either a stop on Commercial Drive or packed from home.
