How Sunhouse works
A plain-language summary of the booking model, so coverage can describe it accurately.
- 1
Request
A family submits a booking request online, any time, with their date, location, and number of children.
- 2
Match
Nicole or April personally match the family with a screened caregiver based on the children’s ages, the neighbourhood, and what the booking needs. No algorithm, no queue.
- 3
Confirm
The family receives their caregiver’s details and confirms. A flat agency booking fee applies, plus an hourly rate set by the children’s ages.
- 4
Care
The caregiver arrives, and Sunhouse stays reachable before, during, and after the booking.
Caregiver selectivity
Sunhouse builds its roster slowly. For every 100 applications the agency receives, only a handful of caregivers meet its strict standards and join the team.

Founders
Nicole Hughes
Co-founder · Brand Strategy & Growth
Nicole's path to Sunhouse has been layered. She taught high school first, then primary, building years of perspective on how children think, learn, and form trust long before she became a mother herself. When her own child arrived, the lens turned inward. The questions that had defined her teaching career began playing out from infancy, in her own home.
What she kept noticing was the gap. Families were searching for a kind of trust the industry wasn't built to deliver. Caregivers deserved to be treated as the professionals they were. Both sides were reaching for something the existing system had no name for.
At Sunhouse, Nicole leads brand, growth, and the voice the agency carries into the world. Her thinking on standards is simple: they only matter when someone is willing to hold them.
April Hughes
Co-founder · Operations & Team Culture
April spent years inside the childcare industry before she co-founded Sunhouse. She worked as a Babysitter and Nanny across Vancouver while building a separate career as a makeup artist. The childcare work was never a side gig. It was the thread that kept pulling her back, and the one that showed her what was broken.
What she saw in those years became the basis of her belief and drive for change. Caregivers without protection. No professional structure. No one in their corner when things went wrong. Families trying to build trust on top of a system that didn't support either side.
At Sunhouse she leads operations, caregiver culture, and the day-to-day execution that holds the agency together. Caregivers are treated as the professionals they are, and families can feel the real difference that makes.

April and Nicole are so responsive and make finding great help easy. Highly recommend Sunhouse for any Vancouver family looking for trusted, professional child care.
My family and I just spent a few weeks in Vancouver, and my wife and I needed childcare for an event. Not knowing anyone locally, we booked with Sunhouse and could not have been happier.
Our Babysitter’s experience was obvious from the start. She made us feel completely at ease, and our child had a great time. We even booked a date night because we felt so comfortable.
Sunhouse made our trip extra special. We would absolutely recommend them to other families visiting Vancouver.
After searching for months, we finally found the perfect full-time Nanny through Sunhouse Babysitting Agency. The process was straightforward and efficient, and the agency really listened to our family’s needs.
Our Nanny is professional, caring, and has become an important part of our daily life. We highly recommend Sunhouse to anyone looking for trustworthy, long-term childcare support.
As new parents without family close by, finding trusted childcare felt daunting. The team at Sunhouse made the process so easy. They listened, cared, and matched us with the perfect sitter for our son.
Every sitter we’ve had has been warm, capable, and wonderful with him. He lights up every time they visit. We’re deeply grateful for the peace of mind Sunhouse has given us and wholeheartedly recommend them to any parent looking for quality care.
We’ve used Sunhouse Babysitting Agency multiple times to watch our 2 and 4 year old boys, and we’ve been consistently impressed. Their sitters are reliable, professional, and great with the children.
It is such a relief to have a service we can trust for date nights and when we need help. We are never in a position where we cannot find care for the children. Highly recommend.

World Cup childcare gap, June 13 to July 7
Vancouver agency offers on-demand babysitters for World Cup families staying in hotels and Airbnbs
Vancouver is expecting more than 350,000 World Cup spectators downtown and thousands of hotel-room guests, many of them families travelling with children. Sunhouse already has a dedicated booking page for hotel and Airbnb stays, with babysitter hourly rates starting at $28 per hour.

The career cost of Vancouver's childcare shortage
Vancouver mothers are cutting hours because they can't find a babysitter. One agency is trying to help.
StatsCan reports that 62% of parents who struggled to find care cited available care as the top challenge, 33% had to work fewer hours, and 26% of parents whose children were not in care had a child on a waitlist. Sunhouse memberships are built for families who need consistent, reliable care but can't get into the licensed system.

Sister-founded, locally built
Two sisters, two businesses, one idea about how childcare should feel
Nicole and April Hughes launched Sunhouse Babysitting Agency in 2021 to build a different kind of childcare company, one that would not fail families or caregivers the way the industry so often does. They have since served more than 1,000 Vancouver families, grown to include nanny placements and memberships, and expanded into Sunhouse Outdoor Academy with summer camps across three Vancouver parks.
